Embossed Cover Magazines

Embossed cover magazines feature raised three-dimensional textures pressed into the cover surface, creating a tactile design element that adds depth, dimension, and unmistakable premium quality. Embossing transforms flat printed covers into sculptural surfaces that invite touch and create lasting impressions — it is the ultimate expression of print craftsmanship.

At Perklets Print, we offer both blind embossing (raised texture without ink or foil) and combination embossing (paired with foil, spot UV, or printed elements) to create magazine covers that are truly works of art. Our precision embossing dies capture fine details including logos, typography, decorative patterns, and textured backgrounds with exceptional clarity.

Embossing is most dramatic on heavier cover stocks (350 GSM+) where the paper has enough thickness to hold the raised impression cleanly. Combined with soft touch lamination and foil stamping, embossed covers create a multi-dimensional sensory experience — visual depth from the shadows cast by raised elements, metallic shine from foil, and velvety texture from the lamination.

Design Guidelines

Provide two cover files: (1) full-colour print file and (2) a separate emboss mask file in solid black/grey indicating areas and depth of embossing.

  • Bleed area: 3mm bleed on all sides. Emboss mask must align precisely with the print file. Use grey values (50% = shallow, 100% = deep) for multi-level embossing.
  • Crop area: A4 cover size: 210 x 297 mm (plus spine and bleed for perfect bound). Emboss mask at same dimensions.
  • Safe area: Embossed elements should be at least 2mm wide. Avoid embossing within 5mm of fold lines or spine edges. Fine text embossing works best at 12pt or larger.

Accepted formats: Print file: AI, EPS, PDF. Emboss mask: separate PDF/AI with grey/black areas indicating emboss depth. INDD (packaged with emboss layer)

FAQs: Embossed Cover Magazines

What is embossing on a magazine cover?

Embossing uses custom metal dies to press raised three-dimensional shapes into the cover surface. This creates a tactile, sculptural effect that adds depth and premium quality. Debossing is the reverse — pressing shapes into the surface.

What is blind embossing vs foil embossing?

Blind embossing raises the paper surface without any ink or foil, creating a subtle, elegant texture. Foil embossing combines raised texture with metallic foil for a dramatic, luxurious effect that catches light and adds colour.

What paper weight works best for embossing?

We recommend 350 GSM or heavier for embossed magazine covers. Thicker paper holds the embossed impression more cleanly and deeply. Lighter stocks may show the emboss pattern on the reverse side.

How detailed can embossing be?

Our precision dies capture details as fine as 2mm. Logos, typography (12pt+), decorative borders, and textured patterns all emboss beautifully. Very fine details may lose definition — our pre-press team will advise on your specific design.

Can embossing be combined with other finishes?

Yes, embossing combines beautifully with foil stamping (raised metallic elements), spot UV (raised glossy elements), and soft touch lamination (raised texture on velvety surface). Multi-finish covers are our specialty.
